Jake first enrolled at Carleton University with the intent to complete a B.C.S in Computer Science. However, after finding a passion for psychology he completed his B.Sc. in Psychology, under Shelley Brown. He considers his experience completing his honours thesis as the biggest inspiration that is pushing him towards a career in research!

Research: Jake’s honours thesis was titled “Aggression and the Spectrum of Narcissism: Understanding the Role of Empathy,” and examined the relationship between narcissism and aggression as well as the usage of empathy to reduce aggression in narcissistic individuals. The results of his study demonstrated the prevalence of different types of narcissism in predicting aggression as well as the validity of using empathy-related tactics in reducing the level of aggression in those who score highly in these different types of narcissism. His research interests are broad and cover topics such as police use of force, police interactions with persons in crisis, risk assessment, dark personalities, and well-being.

Future Goals: Jake is currently part of multiple projects at Carleton University examining police use of force. He plans to pursue a master’s program in psychology in 2022 to contribute to a career in research.

Tips for Success: Read constantly! If you are able to read enough to really understand the literature surrounding your study’s topic the rest will come much easier.
