New Contract Instructor (CI) Opportunities in the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 Terms (posted June 23; amended June 26)

DGES invites applications from members of the CUPE 4600-2 bargaining unit and other interested persons to teach courses in geography, environmental studies, or geomatics, as a contract instructor, during the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 terms. The specific courses requiring CI’s are listed below, and calendar course descriptions are linked to the course numbers.  We welcome inquiries on how these courses fit into our programs’ learning objectives, and this will be a topic of discussion between potential instructors and the departmental Chair.

The University may require that all or part of these courses be delivered remotely, including online.

This is a NEW posting, following up on an initial posting of opportunities on May 1.  Due to ongoing uncertainty about the nature of teaching in the upcoming terms due to COVID-19 response, there were several course offering decisions that were delayed.

Qualifications

A Masters degree in Geography, Geomatics, or Environmental Studies, or a related discipline, is the minimum requirement to be considered for this position.  Previous work or research experience in the subject area is required; demonstrated evidence or potential for teaching excellence is required; previous teaching experience in the subject area will be considered an asset.  CI stipends are $7,453 per 0.5 credit course (all courses in this posting are 0.5 credit courses).

How to Apply

Applications (in the form of a letter, a C.V., a list of all courses taught at a Carleton, evidence of teaching competence including previous teaching evaluations at Carleton or at another institution, and the contact information for two references) are to be emailed to: Geography_JobApplication@carleton.ca. Indicate in the subject line the course[s] to which you are applying.

Incumbency in any course
Note: 15.3(a) of the CA: “When applying to classes for which they have incumbency, applicants shall not be required to (re)submit documentation beyond their updated CV.”

Review of applications and hiring decisions will be made in accordance with the CUPE4600 (Unit 2) Collective Agreement, Article 16- Hiring, Incumbency & Seniority.

Application deadline is July 14th.

All positions are subject to budgetary approval.

Please note the course timetabling constraints.  While some small adjustments may be possible at a later date, most of these should be considered finalized, since students will already have started registering in courses and building their timetables by the application deadline.  Times stated are for the “lecture” – in an online environment this could involve synchronous delivery, or asynchronous where the instructor has the option of asking for synchronous availability from the students at certain specific times, such as for evaluations or other on demand interactions. Some of these courses also have lab or tutorial times associated with the course timetable; please inquire if this imposes limitations.
