The most representative landscapes of the region consist of diverse and fragile ecosystems, such as the restinga, the mangrove swamp, and a dune field that covers more than 126,000 hectares in addition to their scenic beauty, the Lençóis Maranhenses are home to traditional communities, such as fishers, whose cultural traditions are intrinsically linked to the land and waters that surround them. Lençóis Maranhenses has long attracted attention for being a region of extreme contrasts, not only from a physical, geographical, and climatic point of view but also due to its social conflicts and ongoing conservation challenges. The search for sustainability is a fundamental principle, recognizing that the preservation of this delicate ecosystem is essential for the continued environmental, social, and economic balance of the region. The aim of the Cybercartographic Atlas of Lençóis Maranhenses (a joint effort with Carleton University) is to better understand and support the preservation of this region through participatory engagement.

[24
post-30486","cu_event","type-cu_event","status-publish","hentry","cu_event_audience-carleton-community
["GET
