Experiential learning is a cornerstone of our programs because it allows students to move beyond the classroom and apply geographic theory to real\u2011world challenges. Carleton\u2019s Department of Geography and Environmental Studies emphasizes hands\u2011on learning through in class labs, field courses, workplace practicums, co-op and digital mapping training, giving students valuable research skills and practical experience that deepen their understanding of human\u2013environment interactions. This approach reflects the university\u2019s broader commitment to experiential education, which enhances critical thinking, strengthens connections between theory and practice, and improves student engagement and long\u2011term skill development. By immersing students in meaningful, applied learning environments, our programs prepare graduates to address pressing environmental and social issues with confidence and real\u2011world expertise.
