\n Geography Awareness Week 2017\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

For more than 25 years, the third week of November is celebrated as Geography Awareness Week (GAW), a week-long celebration to bring attention to all aspects of Geography. The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University participated in several ways to GAW this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, November 14th, 2017, our department along with The Canadian Association of Geographers, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and the University of Ottawa collaboratively celebrated at 50 Sussex Avenue, formerly the International Pavillion, now renamed the Geography and Exploration Pavillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event aimed, in part, to highlighted the incredible work done by geographers, educators, and students to raise the profile of geography across the country and around the world. The event brought together university and K-12 educators with a concentrated discussion between representatives of the two levels of education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second half of the event was designed to have broad appeal, celebrating the relevance of Geography to many spheres of life. Eight panelists were recruited from our alumni and uOttawa\u2019s to give a lightning talk introduction to what they do and how their geography training helps them achieve their goals. The event was also intended to be a networking opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies also participated in Geography Awareness Week by producing a display for the MacOdrum library highlighting the 2017 GAW theme of Indigenous Rights and Reconciliation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to this display faculty, staff, and students had a table in the library where they spoke directly to others on campus about what is studied in Geography and Environmental Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
