\n In Memoriam: Ken Torrance\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (DGES) at Carleton University is saddened by the <\/span>recent <\/span>loss of <\/span>Professor Emeritus <\/span>J<\/span>.<\/span> Kenneth Torrance<\/span>.<\/span> On December 10, 2021<\/span><\/span> Ken <\/span>passed away peacefully in his sleep while at home with his wife at his side. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ken was hired in 1970, during a period of significant expansion of DGES.<\/span> He was educated at the Ontario Agricultural College (U of T) and <\/span>Cornell University, specializing in Soil Science. <\/span>He<\/span> made numerous contributions to academic service and governance<\/span> throughout his academic career<\/span>. <\/span>In 1975 he received the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Association\u2019s Award for Established Excellence in Teaching. He was appointed to the Rideau River Conservation Authority Land Use Advisory Board <\/span>and National<\/span><\/span> Energy Board<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>He served as Chair of DGES from 1999-2002 and Interim Chair 2005-2006.<\/span> Ken was a strong promoter <\/span>of <\/span>and collaborator <\/span>in<\/span> interdisciplinary <\/span>approaches<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> made many strong contributions to<\/span> our<\/span> \u201dbridging<\/span>\u201d<\/span> doctoral program. As <\/span>many of<\/span> the <\/span>tributes <\/span><\/a>that<\/span> have <\/span>been flowing into the department show<\/span>,<\/span> Ken<\/span> was well respected <\/span>by his peers <\/span>and <\/span>will be<\/span> fondly remembered for his kindness and support.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the family\u2019s intent to have a “Celebration of Ken’s Life” between Easter and early June, indoors or outdoors, dependant on gatherings permitted by the behaviour of the latest Covid variant.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
