Can you help aspiring students in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On December 3, we celebrate the giving spirit, boosted by a series of challenges at futurefunder.carleton.ca<\/a> that can multiple the impact of your donations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you interested in specifically helping students in DGES<\/a> achieve their goals?  We have a suite of scholarships and bursaries that depend on donations, and we would love to be able to strengthen these supports.  Some specific funds that were created most recently are highlighted below, but there are many other funds that could use your help – click here for a full list<\/a>, and then you can click on each particular fund to find out which student needs it was designed to support.  Is there a perfect match for what you would love to contribute?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent initiatives:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The following funds were established in the past few years, so we are particularly interested in getting more donors involved to build up their holdings so they can sustainably help as many students as possible in the coming years.  Click on the titles to see more details about each fund, or to donate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charles Nixon Travel Bursary in Human Geography and Environmental Studies<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This fund was created by alumnus Charles Nixon in 2017, to show his appreciation for the role that travel can play in enriching students’ educations. Already it has assisted a number of Human Geography and Environmental Studies students to engage in field studies beyond what the department can directly provide, and we hope to enable many more similar opportunities through additional investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Doug King Bursary<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This bursary for undergraduate students in our department with demonstrated financial need was endowed by Valerie King in 2021, in memory of our departed colleague, Dr. Doug King.  Doug is very fondly remembered and missed by all of us in the department and by the many, many students he mentored and championed.  A bursary to help students with particularly high financial needs is a very fitting tribute to his memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Global South Graduate Scholarship<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This scholarship, designed to ease access for students from the Global South to graduate programs in Arts and Social Sciences, was formed in 2023, as Dr. Mike Brklacich retired from our department.  He was inspired to create this scholarship by his passion for collaborating with graduate students, researchers, research institutions, and NGOs from the Global South.  The scholarship was launched this academic year, and it aims to allow future students to be better equipped to follow their passions, and to become the next generation of engaged citizens who will address the important social and cultural issues of our time.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
