This guide is meant to give journalists the tools to recognize ghost management in the field, and to help them avoid being taken advantage of by pharmaceutical companies and public relations firms who do their best to manipulate the media to further their interests.<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines are available in English, and in French. Executive summaries in both languages are below.<\/p>\n<h4>Executive Summary<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The health and medicine landscape is complex. Investigating health products and interventions involves navigating a labyrinth of agents, organizations, and diverse systems that operate in the shadows, often influencing journalists\u2019 work.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Applying the ghost management interpretive framework helps better identify constants within the complexity of issues and conflicts of interest present. It also aids in avoiding significant pitfalls that often turn journalists into mouthpieces for corporate interests.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The concept of ghost management encompasses all operations conducted behind the scenes by major companies to shape knowledge, scientific discourses, and cultural, political, and media narratives regarding specific health products and interventions, while influencing the entire field of medicine and public health.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The ghost management interpretive framework identifies seven types of \u201ccapture\u201d: scientific capture, regulatory capture, market capture, professional capture, media capture, technological capture, and civil society capture.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>By utilizing a modified version of Jakobson\u2019s communication model, which integrates the different captures associated with ghost management, it becomes possible to systematically analyze and map the mechanisms influencing discourse about the products and interventions under investigation.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Analyzing and mapping the underlying influences provides tools for journalists eager to conduct rigorous investigations. Enqu\u00eater sur les produits et les interventions de sant\u00e9 implique de se pencher sur un labyrinthe d\u2019agents, d\u2019organisations et de syst\u00e8mes divers qui oeuvrent dans l\u2019ombre et jouent un r\u00f4le crucial, notamment pour influencer le travail des journalistes.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Appliquer la grille d\u2019interpr\u00e9tation du ghost management permet de mieux identifier les constantes dans la complexit\u00e9 des enjeux et des conflits d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eats en pr\u00e9sence. Cela permet \u00e9galement d\u2019\u00e9viter certains pi\u00e8ges importants qui transforment trop souvent les journalistes en porte-voix pour les int\u00e9r\u00eats commerciaux des entreprises.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>La notion de ghost management regroupe l\u2019ensemble des op\u00e9rations d\u00e9ploy\u00e9es en coulisses par les grandes entreprises pour fa\u00e7onner les connaissances, les discours scientifique, culturel, politique et m\u00e9diatique quant \u00e0 des produits et des interventions de sant\u00e9 sp\u00e9cifiques, tout en influen\u00e7ant l\u2019ensemble du domaine de la m\u00e9decine et de la sant\u00e9 publique.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>La grille d\u2019interpr\u00e9tation du ghost management identifie sept types de \u00abcapture\u00bb: capture scientifique, capture r\u00e9glementaire, capture du march\u00e9, capture professionnelle, capture m\u00e9diatique, capture technologique et capture de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 civile.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>En recourant \u00e0 une version modifi\u00e9e du mod\u00e8le de la communication \u00e9labor\u00e9 par Jakobson, qui int\u00e8gre les diff\u00e9rentes \u00abcaptures\u00bb associ\u00e9s au ghost management, il devient possible d\u2019analyser et de cartographier de mani\u00e8re syst\u00e9matique les m\u00e9canismes qui influencent les discours sur les produits et les interventions sous enqu\u00eate.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>L\u2019analyse et la cartographie des influences \u00e0 l\u2019oeuvre offrent des outils pour les journalistes d\u00e9sireux d\u2019accomplir un travail rigoureux lors de leur investigation.
