Eligibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Exchange students study at Carleton for a single semester or a full academic year. To attend Carleton as an exchange student, your home institution must have an exchange agreement with Carleton. Check to see if your university is on our partner institutions list.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For students whose first language is not English, they are required to meet the English language proficiency requirements referenced below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minimum English Language Requirements for Undergraduate<\/strong> Students:<\/p>\n<\/td>

Test date should be no more than 24 months prior to application:
– TOEFL iBT:
Test taken before Jan. 21, 2026<\/strong>: 86 (minimum of 22 in writing and speaking and 20 in reading and listening)
Tests taken after Jan. 21, 2026<\/strong>: 4.5 (minimum of 4.0 in all <\/strong>bands)

Note<\/strong>: we cannot consider a student for exchange to Carleton based on their TOEFL MyBEST Scores. Eligibility will be assessed using the Test Date Scores.

– IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in each band)
– CAEL:  70 (minimum of 60 in each band)

Minimum English Language Requirements for Graduate <\/strong>Students:<\/p>\n<\/td>

Test date should be no more than 24 months prior to application:
– TOEFL iBT:
Tests taken before Jan. 21, 2026<\/strong>: 100 (minimum of 25 in writing, speaking, reading and listening)
Tests taken after Jan. 21, 2026<\/strong>: 5.5 (minimum of 5.0 in all <\/strong>bands)

Note<\/strong>: we cannot consider a student for exchange to Carleton based on their TOEFL MyBEST Scores. Eligibility will be assessed using the Test Date Scores.

– IELTS (Academic): 8.0 (minimum 7.5 in each band)<\/span>
– CAEL: 70 (minimum of 60 in each band)
– Pearson Test of English (PTE)(Academic): 60 overall (minimum 60 in each Communicative Skill)<\/span>

Students must achieve the TOTAL <\/strong>minimum score indicated. They must also achieve the minimum <\/strong>score indicated for each BAND<\/strong> in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

If you wish to study at Carleton but your university is not<\/strong> on our partner institutions list, you may be eligible as a Study Abroad<\/a> student. It is important to note that Study Abroad students are required to pay international student fees to Carleton University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nomination by your Home University<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Students must be nominated for exchange by their home institution. Partners nominate their students using the Carleton University Exchange Nomination<\/em> form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nomination forms are completed online and a form must be submitted for each student<\/strong> to be nominated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
