Workshop Description

This workshop aims to demystify key aspects of academic writing by exploring both the established conventions of academic writing as well as the methods authors use to write creatively within those constraints. The discussion will revolve around the following four levels: sentence, paragraph, structure, and effectively positioning an article’s contribution to the area of research in which it intervenes. Special attention will be paid to methods of structuring paragraphs and to various strategies meant to improve an article’s chances of getting accepted for publication. Participants will also be presented with writing samples that illustrate how abstract writing principles are incorporated into concrete text.

Learning Outcomes

(1) Indicate the common reasons academic journals reject submitted manuscripts

(2) Differentiate between various strategies of approaching the issue under study in research articles  

(3) Describe the main approaches of organizing academic articles

(4) Identify and employ at least two techniques for structuring paragraphs

(5) Recall the main pitfalls of poorly written sentences
