Grey Is the New Black: How to Find and Search “Grey Literature”

February 5, 2020 at 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Location:252B MacOdrum Library
Audience:Current Students

“Grey literature” is research material that comes from non-standard and often non-academic sources.

Searching the grey literature is an important part of conducting a systematic, scoping, or other comprehensive literature review. However, grey literature can often be tricky and overwhelming to search. This workshop will provide students with a greater understanding of how grey literature is defined, the benefits of searching it, and links to a number of useful sites providing access of resources relevant to students in different fields. The workshop will have a hands-on component.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define what grey literature is and is not
  • Justify why it is important to search grey literature when conducting knowledge syntheses
  • Identify key grey literature sources
  • Select grey literature sources specific to a topic and begin creating a search plan
  • Articulate the process involved with producing a well-documented and transparent grey literature search

Facilitated by Aleksandra Blake & Margaret McLeod.

All graduate students are welcome. If you are a TA, this session counts toward voluntary paid training hours, provided that you are working as a TA in the term when the training takes place.
