Managing your master’s thesis: Effective strategies for planning and preparing to write

January 16, 2019 at 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Location:481 MacOdrum Library
Audience:Current Students

Doing a master’s thesis can be a very exciting and intimidating task. One common difficulty is feeling uncertain about how to plan for and prepare to write a larger-scale project after learning how to successfully complete course papers. Often overlooked in discussions about writing, is how much writers can benefit from planning and preparing to write. This type of preparation can help students complete their master’s thesis in a specific timeline.

This workshop, which is exclusively for Masters students, will help participants develop their abilities to think-through and plan their master’s theses. The session will specifically explore the following topics:

  • Planning (e.g., becoming familiar with the look-and-feel of a thesis in your discipline, finding a topic, establishing timelines and writing schedules, identifying steps and stages to write a thesis, and developing a constructive relationship with your supervisor).
  • On-campus resources (e.g., writing, academic integrity, ethics, and referencing styles).
  • Writing strategies (e.g., overcoming writer’s block, taking stock of important points, and thinking structurally about your thesis).

Those attending this session will leave with some tools to help get-on-track to successfully completing their master’s thesis. These tools may help in finding motivation to write and keeping anxiety at bay.
