Introduction to NVivo

Analyzing and sorting large amounts of unstructured text or multimedia data can be difficult. NVivo is a software package for qualitative data analysis that can help you bring order to what may seem like chaos. You can keep track of all data associated with your academic projects, code your data, create models to help organize your research, run queries on your coded data, and create charts and reports for sharing with others . . . and it’s available at Carleton! NVivo is an example of computer-aided qualitative data analysis software. It is used to help researchers organize and analyze qualitative and mixed methods research data (such as interviews, focus groups, field notes, surveys with both open- and closed-ended questions, social media data, research literature etc.) This workshop will give you an understanding of how the software can be used and a grounding in the basics of creating a project, importing data, and coding the data.
Learning Outcomes:
- Know where and how to obtain and install the software
- Learn how to create an NVivo project and how it can be used to help you organize and manage a project
- Know the types of data NVivo supports and how to import them to a project
- Learn about coding and classifying cases
- Know all of the options available to you for ongoing support

All graduate students are welcome. If you are a TA, this session counts toward voluntary paid training hours, provided that you are working as a TA in the term when the training takes place.
