Further, we sometimes fail to appreciate exactly why networking is important, and how it can benefit us even when we are not looking for a job. This workshop will look at the hows and whys of two forms of networking: \u201ctraditional\u201d networking and the new forms of networking made possible by social media.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1) Understand the basic principles of \u201ctraditional\u201d networking, including interpersonal communication in a professional context<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2) Recognize the networking rituals of academia, including conferences<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(3) Cultivate an understanding of networking as an ongoing process that can provide new paths for collaboration and innovation\u2014not just job opportunities<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(4) Gain insights from the work of Brian Uzzi into the importance of maintaining a broad and varied network that is not exclusively professional, and how to recognize \u201csuperconnectors\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Workshop leader(s):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Lafferty<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All graduate students are welcome.
