Being able to find and access things is simpler if we are organized. In addition, we need to be ethical and think about the impact of metadata on the people, places, and objects being described: what are the social, economic, and political consequences of the words chosen to describe data? Does metadata play a role in the way we see the world and each other?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This series of workshops introduces researchers to thinking critically about the basics of metadata creation and use. The suite of five workshops covers these topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The nature and purpose of metadata<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metadata schemas: Using Dublin Core<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Omeka: A case study in applying Dublin Core<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mukurtu: A case study of metadata for social justice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Indigenous ways of knowing and naming<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning outcomes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of these workshops, participants will be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(1) Define and think critically about the creation and use of metadata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(2) Identify one metadata schema and apply these standards to describing digital objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(3) Create descriptors for a set of digital and physical objects, persons, events, etc. using Dublin Core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(4) Critically assess the metadata schemas for two digital repository platforms: Omeka and Mukurtu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(5) Engage in conversations about Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of naming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Registration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Carleton University students:<\/strong> please register via the form below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">University of Ottawa students:<\/strong> please email Martha Attridge Bufton at <a href=\"mailto:marthaattridgebufton@cunet.carleton.ca\">marthaattridgebufton@cunet.carleton.ca<\/a> to confirm registration.
