{"id":1088,"date":"2021-03-09T09:55:31","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T14:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hci\/?p=1088"},"modified":"2021-03-09T10:04:40","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T15:04:40","slug":"carleton-hci-alumna-shares-her-autism-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hci\/2021\/carleton-hci-alumna-shares-her-autism-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Carleton HCI Alumna Shares her Autism Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jessica Rocheleau, a PhD student in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/cognitive-science-phd\/\">Cognitive Science\u00a0<\/a>is focusing her research on understanding autistic people\u2019s privacy and safety online.<\/p>\n<p>This research builds off of Rocheleau\u2019s master\u2019s thesis in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/human-computer-interaction-masters\/\">Human-Computer Interaction<\/a>\u00a0which investigated autistic and non-autistic teenagers\u2019 privacy attitudes and behaviours on social media, and identified factors influencing their privacy and safety online.<\/p>\n<p>Says Rocheleau: \u201cWithin the past few decades, more autistic people are using the Internet to promote their community\u2019s rights and needs; however, this increased online presence heightens safety threats like discrimination and harassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She aims to investigate autistic self-advocates\u2019 experiences with preventing and coping with online safety threats and the role of intersectionality on autistic self-advocates\u2019 online safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy interest in the autistic self-advocacy in online platforms comes from my own journey with discovering my identity as an autistic person, based on my experiences conducting autism research and connecting with the #ActuallyAutistic community on social media over the past four years,\u201d shared Rocheleau.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1089\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 400px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1089 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hci\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rocheleau-2-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of Jessica Rocheleau\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hci\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rocheleau-2-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hci\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rocheleau-2-240x160.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hci\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rocheleau-2-160x107.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hci\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rocheleau-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hci\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rocheleau-2-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hci\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rocheleau-2.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jessica Rocheleau<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Her research will help to shed light on the challenges that autistic people experience with safety online resulting in the development of solutions to make the Internet a more inclusive place for this population.<\/p>\n<p>Rocheleau is designing this study to be as inclusive for autistic people as possible. \u201cI will recruit autistic adults who engage in autism self-advocacy online to give feedback on the project and research materials through a short online survey and a video or instant messaging interview over the Internet. I will implement the recommended changes, and then in Phase 2, I will recruit autistic self-advocates to complete the main part of the study, which includes an interview and online survey about their safety online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/people\/sonia-chiasson\/\">Dr. Sonia Chiasson<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/future-students\/graduate\/\">School of Computer Science\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/people\/kasia-muldner\/\">Dr. Kasia Muldner<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/\">Department of Cognitive Science<\/a>\u00a0have been supervising Rocheleau throughout this research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can always count on them to provide me with detailed feedback and recommendations on all phases of my research work, from initial brainstorming to publication,\u201d shared Rocheleau. \u201cThey are also very positive and encouraging \u2013 they help to boost my morale when I feel discouraged about my work and motivate me to keep moving forward when I hit a setback. I\u2019m extremely grateful to both of them for their support over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rocheleau is in the process of recruiting for this research with the aim of sharing her findings through peer-reviewed articles, presentations at scientific conferences, local autism organizations, and social media posts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dream is for inclusive research to be the norm, rather than an afterthought,\u201d said Rocheleau. \u201cA fellow PhD student and I are working on starting a group that will be dedicated to respectful and inclusive autism research at Carleton. We hope that this group will help put Carleton on the map as an ally to the autistic community and a supporter of the neurodiversity movement.<\/p>\n<p>The PhD student continued: \u201cI hope that this research will help to change the general public\u2019s views on autism. Autism is not a terrible, tragic disorder that makes people na\u00efve to safety threats and incapable of protecting themselves online. It\u2019s a type of neurodiversity that makes people vulnerable to safety threats online because of society\u2019s lack of awareness, understanding, and acceptance towards it.
