Nathaniel has been working at Carleton for over 10 years, for the first 3 years as a career counsellor and since then as a residence counsellor. He loves working with students of diverse backgrounds and identities and enjoys supporting their adaptation to university life, helping them gain skills and understanding around how to self-regulate more effectively.

His varied training and approach includes motivational interviewing, interpersonal psychotherapy and mindfulness strategies, and he has more in-depth training and interest in trauma healing work using ‘bottom up’ up modalities (ie. Somatic Experiencing). His style and philosophy in meetings is to find a balance between compassionate understanding and listening, while also encouraging students to move out of their comfort zone and try new things, which he believes is ultimately the only way we can grow, heal or get unstuck.
