Graduate Student (MSc/PhD in Health Sciences)

Two graduate studentships (MSc or PhD) are available in the laboratory of Dr. Martin Holcik in the Department of Health Sciences at Carleton University. Dr. Holcik’s group is interested in studying the links between protein synthesis and human diseases with specific focus on three distinct, but complementary areas:

1. We delineate the mechanism(s) of selective translation through IRES (internal ribosome entry site) and its impact on cell survival.
2. We study the subcellular localization of RNA binding proteins and its effect on viral infection and apoptosis.
3. We study the pathophysiological implications of defects in tRNA metabolism in patient cells, yeast, and mouse models of the disease.

Basic Requirement
MSc candidates must hold a Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field (e.g. Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, Life Science or Health Science) from a recognized institution with a minimum of A- (80%) average overall. PhD candidates must hold a thesis-based Master of Science degree in a relevant field (e.g. Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, Life Science or Health Science) from a recognized institution with a minimum of A- (80%) average overall. We are looking for a friendly, organized team player with interest in research, who is highly self-motivated, is able to work independently, has excellent written and oral communication skills and has demonstrated excellence at the academic level and in research. Strong problem-solving skills are highly desired. A combination of the following laboratory skills would be beneficial: experience in molecular biology (DNA, RNA, Protein), genomics, tissue culture, cell biology, microscopy, yeast or animal models.
