Course description: This course examines the study of applied ethics in health and health care. Moral systems and socio-political contexts in which bioethical dilemmas are embedded are considered. This course mobilizes key bioethical principles, as well as important theoretical frameworks and concepts from the social sciences to understand health issues from different perspectives. The course will encourage students to reflect on what is meant by applied ethics and learn how to analyze and discuss ethical issues in health and health care, focusing on intersectional approaches to examining health inequities and vulnerabilities. Topics may include biohacking and human enhancement, CRISPR technologies, the COVID-19 pandemic, community and Indigenous health care, ageing and dementia care, and the global organ trade. As an interdisciplinary course, students will gain conceptual tools to think critically about applied ethics in everyday life and in advanced academic research.

Candidates should be proficient in the English language and have particular research or employment experience in the area of applied ethics in medical humanities. Priority will be given to candidates holding a PhD in the field of social sciences and relevant teaching experience at the graduate university level.
