For children with a chronic medical condition, physical activity may be an effective strategy for managing symptoms, maintaining function, and improving quality of life. And yet we know that today, most children are not engaging in enough physical activity to reap these benefits. This presentation will focus on current research that aims to promote movement as medicine in children and adolescents with chronic medical conditions and will highlight the key role of patient stories in shaping on-going studies in the Child Health & Exercise Medicine Program.

Biography:

Dr. Joyce Obeid is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University and McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. Since joining the Child Health & Exercise Medicine Program in 2017, her research has focused on exploring the power of play for children and adolescents growing up with a chronic medical condition or disability. Dr. Obeid’s research combines basic science, applied exercise physiology, and qualitative approaches to address questions that are meaningful for patients and their families. In her spare time, Dr. Obeid enjoys exploring the power of play with her two nieces in her hometown of Leamington, Ontario.

Presenter:

Dr. Joyce Obeid

Assistant Professor, Child Health &
