Chronic pulmonary hypertension in prematurely-born neonates: New insights, new therapies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Premature birth is the leading cause of death and chronic disease in Canadian children. A major source of this burden is bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung injury that arises in half of extremely premature infants (~1000 new cases annually in Canada). BPD is characterized by impaired pulmonary development and vascular remodeling, leading to lifelong respiratory insufficiency. Pulmonary hypertension (PHT) is a common adverse complication of BPD that greatly increases the risks of early death. The incidence and impact of BPD is increasing and no effective therapies yet exist.<\/p>\n

This seminar will highlight recent efforts in the Jankov laboratory to develop new therapies for BPD-associated PHT, based on novel insights into the pathogenesis of pulmonary vascular disease in the developing lung.
