The Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carleton\u2019s Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) is a unique interdisciplinary program<\/strong> designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to succeed at professional schools and in the rapidly changing worlds of healthcare and health research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All concentrations provide an interactive hands-on approach that includes laboratories, workshops and seminars, beginning in first year. The fourth year capstone projects and placements provide unique opportunities to advance your personal and professional goals. Students can also take advantage of unique summer research internships<\/a>, the co-curricular volunteer program<\/a>, and international alternative break opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 Concentrations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The BHSc Honours program offers five concentrations, which can be combined in unique and informative ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biomedical Sciences<\/strong><\/td>\n

  • Provides a strong foundation in biomedical sciences including genetics, biochemistry, immunology, physiology and anatomy<\/li>\n
  • Develops a broad view of health by establishing an understanding of cultural, psychological, technological and environmental contributions to health and disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td><\/tr>
Health Throughout the Lifespan<\/strong><\/td>\n
    \n
  • Develops a comprehensive understanding of the biological and psychosocial factors that affect health and disease throughout the lifespan, ranging from neonatal development to late adulthood<\/li>\n
  • Promotes an interdisciplinary view of how factors, such as gender, local environment and social conditions, can influence health as we age<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td><\/tr>
Disability and Chronic Illness<\/strong><\/td>\n
    \n
  • Provides a biomedical and psychosocial understanding of disability and chronic illness and explores strategies to enable productive and healthy lives<\/li>\n
  • Contextualizes interventions and treatments for these conditions within the broader multi-disciplinary, multi-sector and multi-cultural perspectives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td><\/tr>
Global Health<\/strong><\/td>\n
    \n
  • Develops an understanding of health from the perspective of an interconnected global community and explores the influence of biological, social and political factors on healthcare practices and policies<\/li>\n
  • Establishes the required knowledge to address current and developing issues in international and global health including globalization, climate change, air pollution, emerging and remerging infectious diseases and social inequities and disparities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td><\/tr>
Environment and Health<\/strong><\/td>\n
    \n
  • Explores the influence of our environment on health and develops an understanding of the biological, chemical and epidemiological factors that make individuals more resilient or vulnerable to illness and disease<\/li>\n
  • Learn about the factors relevant to the prevention, intervention, and treatment of environmentally linked illnesses, such as cancer, asthma, and neurodegenerative disorders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    Double Concentration Option<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Within the BHSc, it is possible to take a double concentration. For example, Biomedical Sciences can be combined with Global Health, if you wish to address new and emerging diseases in a global context. Alternatively, you might wish to combine the concentrations in Health throughout the Lifespan and in Disability and Chronic Illness to focus on issues relating to healthy aging. Double concentration can add value to your degree for when you enter the job market or when you apply to professional or post-graduate programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
