Imminent loss <\/span><span class=\"s3\">of a cherished or, at least, familiar and respected building or heritage site <\/span><span class=\"s3\">mobilizes contemporary <\/span><span class=\"s3\">citizens<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> to <\/span><span class=\"s3\">articulate <\/span><span class=\"s3\">protest and resistance<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, loud or low or silent. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">The very feeling of loss may be passed on to next <\/span><span class=\"s3\">and over next <\/span><span class=\"s3\">generations<\/span><span class=\"s3\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">Thus, the loss as such <\/span><span class=\"s3\">may <\/span><span class=\"s3\">acquire heritage quality and <\/span><span class=\"s3\">social <\/span><span class=\"s3\">value o<\/span><span class=\"s3\">f<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> its own. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Political and social change may open ways <\/span><span class=\"s3\">for <\/span><span class=\"s3\">reconstruction<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, <\/span><span class=\"s3\">imagined<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> or <\/span><span class=\"s3\">material<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, or both. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2672\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 400px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/heritage-conservation-symposium\/herb-stovel-memorial-lecture\/picture2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2672\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2672 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/heritage-conservation-symposium\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture2-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/heritage-conservation-symposium\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture2-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/heritage-conservation-symposium\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture2-240x160.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/heritage-conservation-symposium\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture2-160x107.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/heritage-conservation-symposium\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture2-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/heritage-conservation-symposium\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture2-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/heritage-conservation-symposium\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture2.jpg 1065w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Palace is gone, 2008, Gabi Dolff-Bonek\u00e4mper<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">Dr. Dolff-<span class=\"s2\">Bonek\u00e4mper<\/span>\u00a0will discuss the destruction and loss of the Prussian baroque <\/span><span class=\"s3\">p<\/span><span class=\"s3\">alace, heavily bombed during WW2 and blown up in 1950; the construction <\/span><span class=\"s3\">and loss <\/span><span class=\"s3\">of the GDR-modernist Palace of the Republic, open<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ed<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> in 1974, closed in 1991<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">because <\/span><span class=\"s3\">of asbestos contagion,<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> demolished <\/span><span class=\"s3\">2006-2008; and, the reconstruction of the Prussian palace<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> on the spot<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, a concrete structure covered with baroque looking facades, 2013-2020. A recent exhibition \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s3\">Gone and away. The Palace of the Republic is Present\u201d invited open discussions; people who worked in and for the Palace were invited to speak up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>About the Speaker<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Dr. <span class=\"s2\">Gabi Dolff-<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Bonek\u00e4mper<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Professor of Monument Conservation and Urban Cultural Heritage at the TU Berlin from 2002-2021. From 1988 to 2002, monument<\/span><span class=\"s2\">s<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> conservator in Berlin, active and controversial participation in debates on the evaluation and preservation of remnants of the Berlin Wall, controversial political monuments in urban space and post-war modernist buildings in East and West Berlin. 2001\/02 Scholar at the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles. From 2000-2011 member of the Expert Group on the Common European Cultural Heritage at the Council of Europe. Co-author of the Faro Convention of 2005. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Riksbanken<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Jubil\u00e4umspreis<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> 2017 in G\u00f6teborg, Sweden<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">2016-2021 Spokesperson of the DFG Research Training Group \u201cIdentity and Heritage\u201d. Main areas of work: Monument value and cultural heritage theory, historical policies, memory research, architecture and urban planning history of post-war modernism in Europe. Lectures in Paris, Rouen, Caen, Fribourg, Vilnius, Krakow Sofia, Sao Paulo. He has also left the University the vast archives of his career&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p>The National Trust for Canada administers the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationaltrustcanada.ca\/what-you-can-do\/donate\/what-you-can-do-donate-herb-stovel-scholarship2\"><strong>Herb Stovel Scholarship Fund<\/strong><\/a> in his honour. The fund supports the research or conference attendance of one or more students or young professionals in heritage conservation each year.
