Klausen is giving the keynote lecture at “Valuations of Life: Birth Defects, Prenatal Diagnosis, and Disability,” an international workshop held at Uppsala University September 25-26, 2018. The workshop is organized by “Medicine at the Borders of Life,” an interdisciplinary program at Uppsala University that explores controversies and emerging values surrounding the use of fetuses for medical knowledge production, vaccine and pharmaceutical development, and in ethical debates related to these themes (ca 1600s-1970s). The aim of the workshop is to encourage discussions about values of life in relation to the thalidomide disaster, prenatal diagnostics, and abortion. Klausen’s speech, “Contesting Eugenic Abortion: Transnational Feminism, Eugenics and the Legacy of the Thalidomide Tragedy in the Ongoing Struggle for Women’s Reproductive Freedom,” addresses the putative conflict between disability rights and women’s rights in public policy debates about abortion. Klausen’s talk will historicize this tension by examining British feminists’ advocacy of eugenic abortion during the twentieth century.
