Entrance Requirements and Applications
The minimum requirement for admission to the M.A. in Public History Program is an Honours bachelor’s degree (or the equivalent) with at least high honours standing. In their statement of interest students should clearly outline the academic research project they wish to pursue and explain their interest in the field.
Program Requirements
All M.A. students are required to take the following:
- HIST 5002 + 5003: Historical Practice (1.0 credit). These sequential courses guide students through the process of writing research proposals, applying for grants, developing practical research skills, and provide a solid grounding in historical theory and methodology in preparation for thesis and research essay projects.
- Historiography (0.5 credit for Public History students). Students take courses in the historiographical fields that suit their research interests. These courses are usually offered sequentially in pairs, and may include: HIST 5803 + HIST 5804 (Women, Gender and Sexuality), HIST 5805 + HIST 5806 (Canada), HIST 5810 + HIST 5811 (Early Modern and Modern Europe). HIST 5809 (Directed Studies, which may include a concentration in U.S., British, International, or other areas).
In addition to these core requirements, students in Public History will complete:
- HIST 5700: Introduction to Public History (0.5 credits).
- 3 Public History electives. (1.5 credits)
- 0.5 credit in History at the graduate level
- Summer Internship
- HIST 5908: Research Essay (1.0 credits)
One or more of the Public History electives may be replaced by relevant graduate courses offered elsewhere in the University, with departmental permission.
Normally, students will complete most of their course work (3.0 credits) during their first year. In the summer between years 1 and 2, students are placed in a paid internship in the public or private sector. The remaining 1.0 credits of course work (usually two public history electives) and the Research Essay are finished in the second year of the program.
