Description of Research

For my thesis, I will be exploring the impact of surviving a plane crash while on a bombing run during the Second World War. I would be looking into three facets of surviving such an event. The first would be injuries sustained and how they were treated, specifically burns. The second would be if the airmen where able to return to base and their return journey; if not, how the injuries were treated by the enemy once the airmen were found and captured. And third, what was the psychological impact this event had on the pilot and his crew and were they able to return to service after surviving the crash with minor injuries? Putting these three questions together, I would map the airmen’s psychological trauma experience in the war and relate this to modern day PTSD. The research will focus only the Royal Canadian Air Force. I am currently in the process of researching and choosing one squadron to focus my research on.
