Description of Research:
Sam’s research focuses on the gamification of Kingston’s heritagescape and integrating non-colonial histories into classrooms, adhering to the Ontario History curriculum (grades 7, 8 & 10). In a map-based game, students will be encouraged to consider and challenge historic representation in their local community. Using curriculum based learning strategies, decolonial practices, and through valuing learner autonomy, this project opens students to some of the conversations currently happening in Public History/ commemoration studies, encouraging them to act as active participants in their own heritage community. A break down of the game, the research process and reasoning for certain game-based decisions will be explored in an accompanying reflexive essay.
