Description of Research
My research examines the struggle of Republicans in the northernmost slave states such as Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri, to build a viable and organized southern wing of the Republican Party prior to the American Civil War, and their attempts to develop a cohesive southern Republican identity during the war and in the face of Radical Reconstruction.
