HIST 2706A: Ancient and Pre-Colonial Africa

Course Description:

This course provides an overview of empire building in Africa and the integral contribution of African peoples to world history. The focus will be on selected topics from prehistory to 1800. These include early encounters with Islam and Christianity all of which had a profound and lasting impact on Africans. How did this happen? Why did this happen?  How did Africans experience this process? How is the Africa of the 20th and 21st centuries a result of what unfolded in the pre-colonial era?
