Abstract:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This chapter examines the opposition by members of the Xolobeni community <\/span>to <\/span>proposed mining <\/span>on <\/span>their communally<\/span>–<\/span>occupied <\/span>land<\/span>, <\/span>including through litigation<\/span>. <\/span>While only <\/span>one <\/span>strategy amongst <\/span>many<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>use <\/span>of law is notable and has thus <\/span>far <\/span>been effective in challenging the mining <\/span>company <\/span>and the government<\/span>. <\/span>The Xolobeni struggle points <\/span>to <\/span>important links between efforts <\/span>to overcome <\/span>gendered <\/span>structures <\/span>of production and reproduction and environmental destruction <\/span>that <\/span>offers insights for feminist struggles for climate justice<\/span>. <\/span>We <\/span>draw <\/span>on <\/span>Silvia Federici\u2019<\/span>s <\/span>gendered framing of the <\/span>commons to tease out <\/span>the key tensions in the long<\/span>–<\/span>drawn<\/span>–<\/span>out <\/span>opposition <\/span>to <\/span>mining in Xolobeni<\/span>: the <\/span>involvement of <\/span>women as the main <\/span>producers <\/span>of food <\/span>and <\/span>custodians <\/span>of <\/span>the land<\/span>, <\/span>their movement to the centre <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>struggle <\/span>in the context <\/span>of <\/span>violence <\/span>against <\/span>activists<\/span>, <\/span>and their assertion <\/span>of <\/span>new <\/span>forms of temporality <\/span>that engage the <\/span>responsibilities of <\/span>the <\/span>present generation <\/span>to <\/span>the future<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
