Co-op students alternate study terms at Carleton with three or four paid work terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History students have gained real world experience and have made valuable connections in a wide range of workplaces, particularly in the public service. Our students have recently completed work term placements at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/global-affairs-affaires-mondiales\/home-accueil.aspx?lang=eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Affairs Canada<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/indigenous-northern-affairs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportshall.ca\/?lang=EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada\u2019s Sports Hall of Fame<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/library-archives.canada.ca\/eng\/\">Library and Archives Canada<\/a>; Archives and Research Collections, MacOdrum Library; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage.html\">Canadian Heritage<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency.html\">Revenue Canada<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-services-procurement.html\">Public Services and Procurement Canada<\/a>; and many other institutions both domestic and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate students&nbsp;can enter the co-op program in&nbsp;one of two ways. Students can apply directly from high school or CEGEP or during their first year at Carleton. History students would be eligible to start their first work term in the fall of their third year of study. It will offer an immersive experience to students, allowing them to explore, observe, and even use authentic items from a national museum\u2019s collection of signature objects from \u2018the decade of decadence.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/2024\/decoding-the-decades-looking-at-canada-in-the-1980s-in-new-object-based-history-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more<\/a> about student Angela Mortimer and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/cu-people\/james-opp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor James Opp<\/a>&#8216;s experience working with Ingenium&#8217;s Canada Science and Technology Museum. This means real hands-on experience working with artifacts.\u201d<br>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/2024\/decoding-the-decades-looking-at-canada-in-the-1980s-in-new-object-based-history-course\/\">Angela Mortimer<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n                    \n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-practicum\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Practicum?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each winter, eligible* third- and fourth-year students devote one day \/ week (or its equivalent) working in the city as a historian. Some work for one of the many museums, often conducting research on collections in preparation for future exhibits. Others do research on specific topics for various non-profit organizations, usually at Library and Archives Canada or the <a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ca\/en\/arts-heritage-and-events\/city-ottawa-archives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">City of Ottawa Archives<\/a>. Finally, a third group of students find themselves doing several different things in which they get to apply the historian\u2019s skills of conducting research, analysis of data, and the communication of results. As a mature student with some transfer credits, I found Carleton&#8217;s History department to be accommodating and welcoming. I studied for my BA Honours History and enjoyed my experience with Carleton enough that I chose to apply for the MA Public History program.\u00a0<br>Today I&#8217;m working as a curatorial research assistant for Ingenium, doing collections research with the Ontario Hydro collection.
