Its structure is chronological with regular deviations to explore major themes in depth. The fall term will cover the pre-Confederation period; the winter term post-Confederation. Traditionally politics was the main lens through which scholars interpreted Canadian history. Other perspectives have come to the fore in recent decades, yet political history is still a dominant interpretive mode through which the Canadian public understands its past. Therefore this course will foreground the biases, uses and consequences of focusing on politics as a way of understanding history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Main Themes<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>indigenous-settler relations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>colonization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the effects of European imperialism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>French-English and other intra-ethnic relations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>political economy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>regionalism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>modernization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>state formation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>democratization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>immigration policy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the principles and effects of political ideologies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>party politics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>leadership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nationalism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>social justice<strong><br><br><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Evaluation<\/strong>:<br>\nYou will be asked to write an essay and a final examination in each term of this course. There will also be discussions of central issues.
