This very intensive class is about the evolution of Japan internally and in the international arena since 1945. In the domestic context, the peculiarities of<strong><em> Japan<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u2019s language, religions, imperial institution, constitution, political system<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 as Asia\u2019s oldest constitutional monarchy (the line above the course title refers to the three postwar imperial eras), &nbsp;the leading role of the <strong>Liberal Democratic Party<\/strong> [LDP] \u2013 the world\u2019s most successful Conservative party in postwar history- the bureaucracy and&nbsp; the business elite; the socio-cultural and economic milieux: from education, the changing role of women, the major double challenge of <strong>low birth rates and high longevity<\/strong>, immigration, minorities, the <strong><em>hikikomori<\/em><\/strong> (social recluses) and <strong>soft power<\/strong> to the major economic and technological aspects. Japan\u2019s foreign policy combines genuine pacifism with the vital security alliance with the US and other world democracies in order to deal with totalitarian and aggressive China, Russia and North Korea. &nbsp;The <strong><em>Free and Open Indo-Pacific<\/em><\/strong> (<strong>Abe Doctrine see below<\/strong>) is Japan\u2019s response and that of all democracies, to this challenging environment. In order to give<strong> all <\/strong>participants an adequate starting point, a brief review commencing with the <em>Tokugawa<\/em> era [1603-1868] opens the course. Each class starts with the latest news from Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>B<\/strong>. Students are strongly urged to attend classes regularly. <strong>Asking questions in class <\/strong>is <strong>STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. However, <em>Social Networking &amp; Texting [thus the use of SMART PHONES and the EXTRACURRICULAR use of LAPTOPS] as well as Eating<\/em> are allowed ONLY&nbsp; during breaks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C<\/strong>. <strong><em>Grading<\/em><\/strong> includes <strong>two <\/strong>elements: <strong>1 <\/strong>\u2013 One <strong>in-class identification and definition <\/strong>test worth <strong>50% <\/strong>of the final grade. <strong>2<\/strong> &#8211; One <strong><em>TYPEWRITTEN<\/em>, analytical research essay \u2013 worth the other 50%<\/strong> of the grade; it should include<strong>: <\/strong>1 \u2013 A <strong>cover page<\/strong>. 2 \u2013 A brief <strong>opening summary <\/strong>of the paper.3 \u2013 <strong>Footnotes <\/strong>as citation style. 4 \u2013 Around <strong>five sources<\/strong> \u2013 only ONE <em>wikisource. <\/em>There is <strong>NO<\/strong> mandatory length and <strong>NO<\/strong> email submission.<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong>The main learning device is <\/strong><em>Japan since 1945 Learning Handbook<\/em><strong>\u2013 <\/strong>the<strong> 2025 edition, <\/strong>byJacob Kovalio<strong>, <\/strong>which will be available in the Bookstore by early August. In addition, the <strong><em>traditional <\/em>text for the course<\/strong> is :Jeff, Kingston <strong><em>Japan in Transformation<\/em><\/strong><em> , 1945-2010, <\/em>Pearson Education, 2010, 2<sup>nd<\/sup> ed.
