Dipt\u00e9e<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caribbean &amp; Latin American History<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can history teach us about changing the future?&nbsp; How have ordinary people transformed the world during extraordinary moments?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History is not simply an interpretation of the past.&nbsp; It can also serve as a guide for understanding how individuals and communities have challenged injustice, reshaped societies, and inspired lasting change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This course explores the remarkable stories of trailblazers from the Caribbean and Latin America who transformed their own societies and left an enduring legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the lives and actions of activists, intellectuals, artists, political leaders, educators, and grassroots organizers, students will examine how social movements emerge, how ideas spread across borders, and how ordinary people became extraordinary agents of change. From struggles against slavery and colonialism to campaigns for civil rights, democracy, gender equality, environmental justice, and human rights, the course highlights the diverse ways in which people have confronted oppression and imagined more just futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will engage with historical case studies that reveal the complexities of leadership, resistance, and social transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collectively, students will consider questions that remain deeply relevant today: What makes a movement successful? Why do some ideas inspire global action while others fade? What can contemporary activists, policymakers, and citizens learn from the past?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Class Format<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This course is a fourth-year seminar.&nbsp; The course meets once a week for three hours.&nbsp; Together we will study and discuss speeches, memoirs, films, music, visual culture, and historical documents in order to assess both the successes and limitations of movements for change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HIST 4704A \/ LACS 4001B Professor A.
