May 4-18, 2017<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Vatican Library and the Counter-Reformation, a Series of Five Lectures<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 2017 Lyell Lectures at Oxford University, Paul Nelles<\/a> enters the social and material world of the Vatican Library in the late sixteenth century. At the vanguard of the Counter-Reformation, the library gradually adapted to its new role as an instrument of papal policy and hub of ecclesiastical reform. The lectures locate the Vatican Library within a constellation of new state-sponsored collections in early modern Europe. Framed around the vibrant fresco cycles that graced the new library quarters constructed under Pope Sixtus V (1585-1590), the lectures visit specific episodes in sixteenth-century cultural history to probe the dynamic of script and print within the space of the Vatican Library. Particular attention is given to the individuals, practices, and working tools that intersected with libraries in this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Book Launch: Running on Empty<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street, at 6:30pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This free event is presented with Library and Archives Canada and Society Canadian Immigration Historical Society in association with the Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Cambodia and the Vietnamese Canadian Community of Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the 1960s through the 1970s Canada\u2019s dominant value system shifted from Europe centered to a diversity based, multicultural model. One of the tangible expressions of this major change was the response of Canadians and their government to the terrible refugee tragedy, impacting millions of lives, in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Humanities Summer Institute: Technologies East<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explore the possibilities that the digital humanities open up for your research at DHSITE this may! Registration is now open for a series of workshops at the University of Ottawa and at Carleton exploring everything from social media analysis to mapping, twitter bots to game studies. Marx\u2019s Capital<\/em> after 150 Years:  Critique and Alternative to Capitalism Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference which will be held at York University from May 24-26, 2017 and will play host to a number of speakers including:  Immanuel Wallerstein, Saskia Sassen, Etienne Balibar, Himani Bannerji, Marcello Musto and many more. Everyone is welcome.  Admission is free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workshop: Canadian Foreign Intelligence History Project (CFIHP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a one-day workshop that the CFIHP will be holding in Ottawa on 14 June. Full details are available on the attached pdf as well as on the CFIHP webpage: https:\/\/carleton.ca\/csids\/canadian-foreign-intelligence-history-project\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will be an opportunity discuss the documentation available through the CFIHP database and opportunities for research and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

July 17-22, 2017<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Historical Thinking Summer Institute<\/strong>
\nThe Historical Thinking Summer Institute is designed for teachers, curriculum developers, professional development leaders, historians, museum educators and curators who want to enhance their expertise at designing history programs, courses, units, lessons, projects, or educational resources that explicitly focus on historical thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attendees of the 2017 Historical Thinking Summer Institute will participate in a variety of activities including presentations and workshops, learning activities at the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum, discussions of readings, guest<\/p>\n\n\n\n

lectures, and group work to explore six historical thinking concepts: evidence, significance, continuity & change, cause & consequence, perspective-taking, and the ethical dimension of history. For more information visit http:\/\/www.canadashistory.ca\/HTSI<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juno Beach Centre Fellowship<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Juno Beach Centre is proud to announce the launch of the 2017\/2018 Juno Beach Centre Fellowship. The Juno Beach Centre Fellowship will grant a Canadian student the opportunity to expand their research with a hands-on experience like no other. This program offers a unique opportunity for a student to foster their future career and have a meaningful impact on a Canadian museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a leader in the field of Canadian history and tourism, we are looking for your assistance in helping spread the word to your students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Juno Beach Centre Fellowship is a one year program, with research taking place both in Canada and at the Juno Beach Centre in France. The Fellowship Program includes a subsidized trip to the Juno Beach Centre and a $2000 honorarium upon the competition of final research and delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
