The full story, entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/carleton-screens-film-on-1970s-push-for-equality-on-campus\/\">Carleton Screens Film on 1970s Push for Equality on Campus<\/a>,&#8221; can be found online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis documentary was very much a labour of love,\u201d says Carleton interdisciplinary studies librarian and historian, Martha Attridge Bufton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 22-minute documentary is based on her master\u2019s thesis, which won the&nbsp;2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/cha-shc.ca\/english\/what-we-do\/prizes\/the-eugene-a-forsey-prize.htm\">Eugene A. Forsey Prize<\/a> from the Canadian Historical Association for the best thesis on labour history. The film is the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/\">Department of History<\/a>\u2018s 75th anniversary project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attridge Bufton co-produced and directed the film with History Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/david-dean\/\">David Dean<\/a>, co-director of the Carleton <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ccph\/\">Centre for Public History<\/a>. Tai Zimmer, Carleton\u2019s video editor\/multimedia specialist in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpc\/\">Media Production Centre<\/a>, is the film\u2019s senior film editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It opens with the 1971 hit \u201cI Am Woman\u201d by Helen Reddy\u2014a feminist anthem at protests and marches around the world in the 1970s\u2014and contains interviews with the five organizers interspersed with black and white photos of social movements and campus life of the era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many new academics, librarians and support staff arriving at Carleton in the 1970s were women who recognized that their working conditions were often different than those of their male colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, female support staff had fewer benefits than men, their work was devalued as \u201cless complex,\u201d and they were regularly asked to take on extra responsibilities without compensation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following excerpt is from the Carleton Newroom story by Joseph Mathieu.
