In the opening paragraph of his canonical study of popular media from 1972, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Folk-Devils-and-Moral-Panics\/Cohen\/p\/book\/9780415610162\"><em>Folk Devils and Moral Panics<\/em><\/a>, sociologist Stanley Cohen outlined his basic thesis:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Societies appear to be subject, every now and then, to periods of moral panic.
