Some argue is should be returned to India<\/a>&#8221; available online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the death of Queen Elizabeth II last week, online users are calling for the British government to surrender artifacts obtained by the British Empire, including the Kohinoor diamond \u2014 one of the most famous diamonds in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversations about the diamond \u2014 also spelled Koh-i-noor \u2014 which is part of the British crown jewels, have been trending on social media amid coverage of the queen\u2019s death, with users posting their opinions about the empire \u2014 and memes about stealing the diamond back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"inline-video inline-video--in-body\">\n<div class=\"inline-video__background\">\n<div class=\"inline-video__player\">\n<div class=\"videoPlayer styles_videoPlayer__hWpgx styles_adNotPlaying__yQRQY\">\n<p class=\"\">The online jokes aside, many point to the serious colonial history behind Britain\u2019s possession of the diamond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Kohinoor, which means \u201cMountain of Light,\u201d was originally about 186 carats, and while its exact origins are unknown, it was most likely&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-38218308\">discovered<\/a>&nbsp;in South India in the 13th century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Danielle Kinsey, an assistant professor of history with a focus on the history of 19th century Britain and empire at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, said its impressive size often shrouds its less appealing history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;More importantly, it has a history of being part of war booty or trophies taken as the result of war in South Asia.
