Under his leadership, the stories associated with the Capital History project were identified, researched, and written by over two hundred Carleton graduate and undergraduate students over five years, working with community partners and individuals. <\/p>\n\n\n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2025\/11\/capitalhistory-wide-2.jpg\" alt=\"David Dean\n\" class=\"wp-image-27270\" style=\"width:951px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2025\/11\/capitalhistory-wide-2.jpg 940w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2025\/11\/capitalhistory-wide-2-512x256.jpg 512w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2025\/11\/capitalhistory-wide-2-320x160.jpg 320w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2025\/11\/capitalhistory-wide-2-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awesomefoundation.org\/en\/chapters\/ottawa\">Ottawa<\/a>\u00a0project created by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/david-dean\/\">David Dean<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>September\u2019s Awesome Ottawa award goes to David Dean to support a hockey-themed Capital History Kiosk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re easy to spot when you\u2019re walking along any of Ottawa\u2019s busy streets,\u201d says David. \u201cNot the drab traffic control boxes themselves, but the colourful history lessons that have been applied to them to remind you of what Ottawa used to look like 10, 50, or 100 years ago, and to tell the story of a significant event that took place near each box.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCapital History Kiosks,\u201d David continues, \u201cconsists of over 60 installations across the city telling stories of neighbourhood histories through a dynamic image wrapped around a traffic control box with a QR code taking visitors to the website&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalhistory.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">capitalhistory.ca<\/a>, where they can read, listen, and see more. Many of the images on the kiosks are archival, while others were commissioned from local artists. Audio files on the website were scripted and performed by actors or extracted from oral history interviews.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David is a retired Carleton University history professor who is passionate about Ottawa&#8217;s history.
