Its closure, alongside&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/israeli-strikes-on-tehran-oil-depot-highlight-gaps-in-international-law-278380\">U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran\u2019s oil infrastructure<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 including the strategic export hub on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/kharg-island-irans-energy-lifeline-that-has-so-far-escaped-attack-278139\">Kharg Island<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 has raised fears of a protracted conflict as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/player\/play\/video\/9.7131116\">fuel prices soar<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most news coverage and analysis has focused on the immediate threats posed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/crl4gxgkkylo\">by missiles<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/iran-sea-mines-explainer-9.7124916\">drones and mines<\/a>, and the global implications of the strait\u2019s closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But beneath these headlines lies a much deeper story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than a century, Iran has occupied a powerful place in the western imagination, characterized as a volatile region that sits atop&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/map-iran-oil-reserves-compare-rest-world-11350088\">one of the world\u2019s largest oil reserves<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working within the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energyhumanities.ca\/\">energy humanities<\/a>&nbsp;sub-field,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/ian-wereley\/\">my research<\/a>&nbsp;and teaching focus on the early history of oil in Iran and the development of western oil cultures during the early 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Full article: <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-west-has-long-characterized-irans-oil-as-a-prize-to-be-claimed-278379\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-west-has-long-characterized-irans-oil-as-a-prize-to-be-claimed-278379\">https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-west-has-long-characterized-irans-oil-as-a-prize-to-be-claimed-278379<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the recent outbreak of hostilities in the Persian Gulf, the focus of international attention has returned to one of the world\u2019s most important energy chokepoints: the&nbsp;Strait of Hormuz.
