{"id":28084,"date":"2026-09-10T13:40:38","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/?p=28084"},"modified":"2026-09-10T13:44:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:44:14","slug":"meet-the-carleton-alum-telling-ottawas-200-year-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/2026\/meet-the-carleton-alum-telling-ottawas-200-year-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Carleton Alum Telling Ottawa\u2019s 200-Year Story"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 100%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] pb-5 after:w-10 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Meet the Carleton Alum Telling Ottawa\u2019s 200-Year Story\n                    <\/h1>\n                \n                                \n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nestled between Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal Locks sits the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bytownmuseum.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bytown Museum<\/a>, dedicated to sharing the history of the region \u2014 as unceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory, the founding of Bytown and the City of Ottawa we know today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This September will mark 200 years since the beginning of the construction of the Rideau Canal, led by Lieutenant Colonel By and the establishment of the settlement of Bytown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exhibition and Collections Manager Chloe Dennis is helping lead the museum\u2019s bicentennial activities through a new temporary exhibition exploring Ottawa\u2019s past, present and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur approach for the bicentennial is to recognize this huge event that happened in our city\u2019s history and acknowledge that the history of the area began before 1826 with the Anishinaabe Algonquin people, for whom the canal disrupted their way of life,\u201d explains Dennis.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur exhibit continues beyond 2026 because the city\u2019s story is ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Carleton alum, Dennis completed a bachelor\u2019s degree in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/\">history<\/a>&nbsp;followed by a master\u2019s degree in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/ma-in-public-history-program\/\">public history<\/a>.
