Abstract

Interest in developmental numerical cognition is growing among researchers around the globe, leading to an increase in funds directed to the field. This increased interest will enhance the understanding of early numerical processes to predict later mathematical achievement, which is an important predictor of academic and job success in adult life. This growing body of research should converge to design public policies and evidence based pedagogical practices, as well as to generate rich home learning environments. Several research groups have focused on these topics in developed and undeveloped countries, although their young children learn in different educative and economic contexts.

Chile has a particular economy with a strongly segregated educational system where researchers are encouraged to contribute to this field of research. Here, we review the state of the research being conducted in Chile, focusing on the main findings in developmental numerical cognition.
