Title: Linked Data, Why Bother?

Abstract:

In the post-computers era, and especially after the Internet boom in the 2000’s, data is being continuously growing with an unprecedented scale. This growth promotes utilizing this data in many ways: answering questions, business-driven analytics, research, etc. However, this data typically stay in the data silos where they were generated, which significantly limit their use. Ten years ago, what is called the Semantic Web came to existence.

The vision of this Semantic Web was to publish data in an abstract format to make it easily processed by computers, and link data sets together to fully exploit the relationships between these data sets. In this talk, I give an overview of the history of representing data before the Semantic Web, what the Semantic Web is all about, its state now, the challenges facing achieving its full potential, and briefly discuss my contributions to overcoming these challenges.
