{"id":2390,"date":"2014-11-13T13:09:48","date_gmt":"2014-11-13T18:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/icslac\/?p=2390"},"modified":"2014-11-17T15:58:52","modified_gmt":"2014-11-17T20:58:52","slug":"culture-hub-event-jeff-packman-university-toronto-coming-icslac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/icslac\/2014\/culture-hub-event-jeff-packman-university-toronto-coming-icslac\/","title":{"rendered":"A Culture Hub Event: Jeff Packman, University of Toronto presents  &#8220;Playback and Posthuman Grooves: Professional Musicians, Mediated Listening, and the Feel of Music in Salvador, Brazil.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Jeff Packman (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is an ethnomusicologist who has conducted extensive fieldwork in Bahia, Brazil focusing on professional music making in relation to cultural politics, especially discourses of race and class.\u00a0 More recently, his research has examined various manifestations of\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">samba de roda<\/span>, an Afrodiasporic music and dance practice from rural Bahia.\u00a0\u00a0Jeff is completing a book on local working musicians in Bahia\u2019s capital city, Salvador, and his writing has appeared in edited collections as well as journals including\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Black Music Research Journal<\/span><\/span>,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ethnomusicology<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Latin American Music Review<\/span>, and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ethnomusicology Forum<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0 He currently teaches at the University of Toronto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This Culture Hub event is \u00a0co-sponsored by School for Studies in Art and Culture: Music and the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture and will take place on Friday, November 21st, 2014 at 2:30 pm in Room 201D St. Patrick&#8217;s Building.
