Featuring a keynote address by Vancouver-based artist Jin-me Yoon, as well as a full day of panel presentations and discussions, the conference welcomes scholars, students, and cultural workers engaged in Asian Canadian and Asian diasporic research creation, and cultural engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first day of the conference,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong>April 12<\/strong>, begins at 1:00pm at the Korean Cultural Centre with a round table of artist talks by Jinny Yu (Ottawa), Jacqueline Ho\u00e0ng Nguy\u1ec5n (Stockholm\/Montreal), and Sarindar Dhaliwal (Toronto). Following this discussion is a panel featuring curators and scholars who will speak to the challenges and ethics of curating Asian diasporic art. We will wrap up the first day with a plenary discussion that will help steer the conversation to linkages beyond the nation, negotiating the politics of transnational exchanges as they pertain to conceptions of \u2018Global Asias.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second day of the conference,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong>April 13<\/strong>, begins at 10:00am with a tour of the Canada Art Bank\u2019s collection of works by culturally and racially diverse artists in Canada. The tour is followed by a workshop that will highlight networks and nodes in the study of Asian diasporic contemporary art. We will then reconvene at the National Gallery at 6:00pm for<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/ctca\/cu_event\/jin-yoon-keynote-lecture\/\">a keynote lecture<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>by Vancouver-based artist and professor Jin-me Yoon (Simon Fraser University), whose presentation, \u201cPostcards from<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em>The<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em>Long View:<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Nationalism, Transnationalism and Relationalism\u201d will address her practice, with attention to her new body of photographic postcards,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em>The Long View<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This conference is organized as part of the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em>Canada 150: Asian Canadians in Visual Culture<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em>project, which marks Canada\u2019s 150<sup>th<\/sup><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>anniversary by signaling 2017 as a key moment to address the representation of Asian Canadians in visual culture. A partnership between Concordia University, Carleton University, New York University, and the University of British Columbia,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em>Canada 150: Asian Canadians in Visual Culture<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>is a SSHRC-funded collaborative research project initiated by Alice Ming Wai Jim (Concordia), Ming Tiampo (Carleton), Christopher Lee (UBC), and Alexandra Chang (NYU). The project brings together researchers, cultural practitioners and community organizers through a series of workshops, conference meetings, and public lectures in New York, Montreal, and Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This conference is also generously supported by the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture (ISCLAC), the Centre for Transnational Cultural Analysis (CTCA), the School for Studies in Art and Culture, the Korean Cultural Centre, the Canada Council for the Arts (Art Bank), and the National Gallery of Canada.
