The event will include a screening of Story\u2019s renowned short film, <\/span>Camperforce <\/span>(2017) and a Q&A to follow the dialogue on Thursday, September 25th at 5:30 in Tory Building, Room 342.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About our 2025 Speaker:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Brett Story is an award-winning filmmaker, geographer and writer. Her interests across the fields of documentary and critical theory are expansive, and include experimental cinema and essay films, prisons and abolition, political geography, critical theory, racial capitalism and Marxist political economy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her films have screened in festivals around the world, including CPH-DOX, the Viennale, SXSW, True\/False, and Sheffield DocFest. Her 2016 feature documentary, <\/span>The Prison in Twelve Landscapes<\/span>, was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and was a nominee for Best Feature Length Documentary at the Canadian Screen Awards. Brett\u2019s third feature documentary, <\/span>The Hottest August<\/span>, was released to critical acclaim in March 2019. The film was a New York Times Critics\u2019 Pick, where it was described as \u201ca cinematic gift, an intellectual challenge, an emotional adventure.\u201d <\/span>The Hottest August <\/span>was broadcast on PBS\u2019 Independent Lens in 2020 and was featured in over a dozen best of the year lists, including in <\/span>Rolling Stone<\/span>, <\/span>Vulture<\/span>, and <\/span>Vanity Fair <\/span>magazines.<\/span><\/p>\n

Story is the author of the book <\/span>Prison Land: Mapping Carceral Power Across Neoliberal America<\/span>, and she holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Toronto. She has held fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Sundance Institute, and MacDowell. Brett was named by Variety as one of 2019\u2019s “10 Documentary Filmmakers to Watch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Story\u2019s most recent feature documentary, <\/span>Union<\/span>, <\/span>co-directed with Steve Maing will be screening at <\/span>Pique <\/span>on Saturday September 27th.<\/span><\/p>\n
