With a blend of humour, emotion, and introspection, each character comes to life through engaging anecdotes and musical interludes performed on a variety of unusual musical instruments. From an enigmatic factory worker with a teardrop tattoo, to a US-marine-turned-Buddhist-priest-and-sculptor, Characters delves deep into the profound impact that diverse personalities can have on our own lives and stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suitable for all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Run time approximately 2h<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holding degrees in music, visual art, and English and theatre studies, Oshawa-born\/Ottawa-based interdisciplinary artist Jesse Stewart is dedicated to reimagining the spaces between artistic disciplines. His music has been documented on over twenty recordings including Stretch Orchestra\u2019s self-titled debut album, which was honoured with the 2012 \u201cInstrumental Album of the Year\u201d Juno award. Having been widely commissioned as a composer and artist, he has created instruments, music, performance art works, and interactive sound art installations using such diverse materials as stone, ice, water, fire, glass, books, turntables, chemical reactions, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His work has been heralded by critics, journalists, and creative practitioners from around the globe who have described it as \u201ctruly exciting\u201d (Musicworks 76), \u201cexceptional\u201d (Cadence Oct. 2002), \u201cphenomenal\u201d (Cadence Nov. 1999), and \u201cingenious\u201d (Exclaim! June 2006). \u201cStewart quietly opens the door for us to a limitless world of delicate sonic beauty\u201d writes Randy Raine-Reusch in Musicworks 97. \u201cHighly recommended ear-cleansing\u201d states a review in Italy\u2019s Touching Extremes (2007). \u201cJesse Stewart is an eloquent and poetically powerful percussionist, composer, improviser and teacher\u2014a man of ideas and inventions,\u201d writes jazz legend William Parker. \u201cJesse is an incredibly innovative artist. He\u2019s a performance artist, he\u2019s a jazz drummer, he\u2019s an incredible creative force\u201d states Roman Borys, cellist with the internationally acclaimed Gryphon Trio. \u201cHe\u2019s extraordinary,\u201d states creative polymath Michael Snow, \u201che is constantly surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegladstone.ca\/past_shows\/chance-encounters\/\">Chance Encounters<\/a>, his first one-person show that was performed at the Gladstone Theatre in July 2023, received rave reviews.
