\nLandon Pearson Resource Centre for the Study of Childhood and Children\u2019s Rights\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Landon Pearson Resource Centre for the Study of Childhood and Children\u2019s Rights at Carleton University is thrilled to announce the creation of three annual student bursaries with funding support from The Muttart Foundation. The student bursaries are named in memory of Dr. Joy Calkin, a long-time Member and Director of The Muttart Foundation, who passed away in 2020. The awards also build on and expand the important work undertaken by the Hon. Landon Pearson and her life-long dedication and contribution to the development of children\u2019s rights in Canada and abroad.<\/p>\n

To honour Joy Calkin and to celebrate Landon Pearson and her concern for rights in infancy and early childhood, the student bursaries will be awarded each year to a senior undergraduate student, a senior Indigenous student, and a graduate student undertaking research using a children\u2019s rights respecting approach to issues in maternal and child health, or with a focus on issues in infancy and early childhood. This may include childbirth and postnatal care and nurture; access to early learning and care opportunities; support for families with young children; health promotion; and policy research, and that supports the right to play. Student research that examines rights-respecting best practices or that envisions a rights-respecting best practice to address an issue for infants and young children in a practical way are welcome, as is research that examines the impacts of child and family public policy from a children\u2019s rights-based perspective.<\/p>\n

Each student bursary is in the amount of $5,000. The funds are to be used to for education-related expenses ($4500) and subsequent travel costs ($500) to enable award recipients to present their findings at the annual Child Rights Academic Network (CRAN) conference in Ottawa, Ontario. One application per student.<\/p>\n

Eligibility\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Any student enrolled full-time in a children\u2019s rights or allied field in an undergraduate program at the 4th year level, or in a graduate program at a Canadian university regardless of citizenship or nation is eligible for the award. One application per student only.<\/p>\n

2. Funds must be spent on educational expenses directly related to the student\u2019s honours research paper or capstone project for fourth year students; graduate major research paper, thesis or dissertation approved by their academic advisor for graduate students. Status and eligibility must be confirmed in the academic letter of recommendation.<\/p>\n

Application and Deadline: 2021-22 Bursaries<\/strong><\/p>\n

Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements may apply for the bursaries by providing the following materials prior to the deadline listed below. All materials should be submitted as one pdf document and sent via email with the subject line \u201cDr. Joy Calkin Bursary application\u201d to: VirginiaCaputo@cunet.carleton.ca<\/a>\u00a0 by August 15, 2021. Results will be announced September 15, 2021 and posted on the Landon Pearson Centre website www.carleton.ca\/landonpearsoncentre<\/a><\/p>\n

1. Max. 500-word project description that includes the research problem and question(s), research objectives and aims, methods, primary research tasks, and potential outcomes.<\/p>\n

2. Max. 300-word statement that addresses how the research uses a children\u2019s rights-based approach and how it will offer potential applied advances to improve the lives of infants and young children.<\/p>\n

3. Plan for research (one page max).<\/p>\n

4. Curriculum Vitae<\/p>\n

5. Academic letter of recommendation (included or under separate cover)<\/p>\n

All materials, excluding letter of recommendation, should be submitted as a single PDF document.<\/p>\n

The Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n

Three awards will be presented annually: one award to a senior undergraduate student (4th year standing), one award to a graduate student (MA or PhD standing, any year), and one award to a senior Indigenous student (4th year or graduate student standing).<\/p>\n

Each recipient receives $5,000 issued upon acceptance of the award.<\/p>\n

Each recipient agrees to use $500 of the award to supplement the costs of traveling to the CRAN annual conference during the year of the award where they will make a short 20-minute presentation on their work. CRAN typically takes place the first Friday in February each year at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.<\/p>\n

Ces bourses d’\u00e9tudes honorent la m\u00e9moire de Joy Calkin, d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e en 2020, qui fut membre puis Directrice de la Fondation pendant plusieurs ann\u00e9es. Ces bourses en m\u00e9moire de Joy Calkin, ax\u00e9es sur les pr\u00e9occupations de Landon Pearson pour les droits des enfants d\u00e8s la petite enfance, seront attribu\u00e9es \u00e0 des \u00e9tudiants des groupes suivants: finissants de programmes de premier cycle, membres des Premi\u00e8res Nations, M\u00e9tis, Inuits ainsi que des \u00e9tudiants aux \u00e9tudes sup\u00e9rieures, dont les projets de recherche portent sur des questions telles que la sant\u00e9 maternelle et infantile, tout particuli\u00e8rement pr\u00e9maternelle, la naissance, les soins post natals, physiques et affectifs, l’acc\u00e8s \u00e0 des apprentissage pr\u00e9coces, au jeu, l’aide aux familles avec de jeunes enfants et la promotion de la sant\u00e9. Des recherches qui mettent l’accent sur des pratiques \u00e9ducatives fond\u00e9es sur les droits des enfants sont encourag\u00e9es, tout comme celles qui examineraient l’impact des politiques sociales dans la perspective des droits des enfants.<\/p>\n

Les bourses sont d’une valeur de $5,000 chacune.
