{"id":6464,"date":"2022-04-11T10:45:29","date_gmt":"2022-04-11T14:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/iis\/?p=6464"},"modified":"2022-04-11T10:45:29","modified_gmt":"2022-04-11T14:45:29","slug":"sex-taxes-covid-19-how-sex-workers-navigated-pandemic-relief-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/iis\/2022\/sex-taxes-covid-19-how-sex-workers-navigated-pandemic-relief-efforts\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex, taxes &#038; COVID-19: How sex workers navigated pandemic relief efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After completing research funded through a SSHRC partnership grant, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/womensstudies\/people\/ryan-conrad\/\">Dr. Ryan Conrad<\/a> and his University of Ottawa colleague Dr. Emma McKenna shared some of their initial findings on <em>The Conversation<\/em> through an article on entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/sex-taxes-and-covid-19-how-sex-workers-navigated-pandemic-relief-efforts-172351\">Sex, taxes &amp; COVID-19: How sex workers navigated pandemic relief efforts<\/a>.\u201d This research was conducted in collaboration with Prostitutes of Ottawa Gatineau Work Educate Resist (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.powerottawa.ca\/\">POWER<\/a>). Dr. Conrad and McKenna have gone on to further elaborate on the methodological and ethical questions they grappled with throughout the research project with POWER in a new book chapter entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/chapters\/edit\/10.4324\/9781003199236-4\/lessons-learned-lessons-shared-ryan-conrad-emma-mckenna\">Lessons Learned, Lessons Shared: Doing Research in Collaboration with Sex Workers and Sex Worker Organizations<\/a>\u201d in the recently published anthology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Facilitating-Community-Research-for-Social-Change-Case-Studies-in-Qualitative\/Burkholder-Aladejebi-Schwab-Cartas\/p\/book\/9781032058023\"><em>Facilitating Community Research for Social Change: Case Studies in Qualitative, Arts-Based and Visual Research<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> This chapter offers readers insights into how they, as activist academics, navigated some of the ethical concerns that arise when doing research with marginal communities.
