This classroom orientation is specifically designed for the following classrooms.  Click on each room to access specific information regarding the technology permanently installed therein, from the IMS Room Search page:

The orientation videos and content have been designed to best describe the equipment in this classroom, however there may be some minor variations between the classrooms displayed in the videos, and the actual classroom you will be teaching in. This might include small differences such as podium colour, but the equipment itself will be the same. If you would prefer an in person orientation of your particular classroom, please contact IMS Classroom Technology Support to book a session.

While this online orientation provides almost all the information you will need to know about your classroom, IMS recommends that you familiarize yourself with the specific classroom(s) you will be teaching in. You can find out exactly what type of equipment is available in your particular classroom by using the Room Search tool. If you would like to have a one-on-one orientation, it is advised to book an in-person orientation session well in advance of the start of the semester.

Getting Started

Obtain MC1 account

In order to sign in to the classroom computer, you will require a MyCarletonOne account from Information Technology Services. You should ensure that you have a working MC1 account prior to the first day of classes. Click here to learn how to set up your MC1 account.

Obtain console key

In order to open the teaching console in classrooms, you will require a cabinet key. You can sign out a key from the IMS Classroom Technology Support office in Loeb D283. The key can be signed out for either a semester or a full year depending on the teaching status of the instructor.

Steps summary

Open teaching console

Use the console key to open the equipment cabinet. To obtain a key you must sign one out at the IMS Classroom Technology Support office in Loeb D283. Once the console is unlocked you will have access to equipment and connection ports you might need. If you need connection cables for your laptop, you can also sign them out through the IMS classroom support office.

Power on projector(s)

To power on the data projector(s) use the AMX touch panel. Press the “On” button – this will allow you to display content on the projector screen at the front of the classroom, such as Power Point presentations, videos and media from various sources such as a DVD, Blue-ray, Youtube, and your USB memory stick. To blank the projector(s), press the “Blank” button. This feature is useful when inputting sensitive information such as usernames and passwords that you do not want your audience to see.

Log in to computer

Use your MC1 account to log in to the classroom computer. Click here to learn how to set up your MC1 account. For further assistance contact ITS by calling ext 3700 or by emailing its.service.desk@carleton.ca.Once logged in, you will have access to Carleton’s current software applications, you will also be able to open documents, webpages, email, and more.

Adjusting Audio

To adjust the audio in the room, press down on the + or – symbols on the touch panel or adjust the volume slider bar. You can also mute the audio by pressing the mute button.

Adjust Podium Height

This room has a height adjustable podium that allow instructors to raise and lower the podium based on your needs or preferences by using the buttons typically located on the right of the podium.

It is important that the podium remain clear of possible obstructions. It is also very important that you do not sit or lean on the podium.

Connecting your laptop

To connect your laptop to the classroom projector(s) you will need to identify what type of laptop you have.

*Please note: these rooms do not have HDMI connectivity

VGA cable
VGA stands for video graphics array, and is most commonly used for older computer models.

 PC Laptop (VGA)

This is a video demonstration for a PC laptop connected using a VGA cable. To sign out a VGA cable visit the IMS Classroom Technology Support office in Loeb D283. Once you have the VGA cable you will be able to connect it to your laptop and the classroom projector(s) by using the VGA port located inside the teaching console.  Please note that, if necessary, a separate audio cable is required when connecting a laptop through a VGA connection.  This too can be signed out from the IMS Classroom Technology Support office.

Mac Laptop (VGA)

This is a video demonstration for a Mac laptop connected using a VGA cable. To sign out a VGA cable and/or adapter, visit the IMS Classroom Technology Support office in Loeb D283. Once you have the VGA cable you will be able to connect it to your laptop and the classroom projector(s) by using the VGA port located inside the teaching console.  Please note that, if necessary, a separate audio cable is required when connecting a laptop through a VGA connection.  This too can be signed out from the IMS Classroom Technology Support office.

Hotkeys

On a Windows-based laptop, a quick way to toggle the video output to an external display, like a projector(s), is to press the Windows button plus the letter P.

Using the SMART Sympodium

Classrooms equipped with a SMART Sympodium allow instructors to annotate Power Point presentations and other software applications, while projected to the class.

How to make Power Point annotations

  1.  Complete the following steps:
    • Have a key to open equipment cabinet
    • Use the AMX panel to turn on projector(s)
    • Power on projector(s) and select “computer” from the AMX panel
    • Log-on to the classroom computer using your CUNET (MC1) account
  2. Launch the Power Point slideshow presentation
  3. Use the stylus to annotate your slides and/or erase annotations

Opening a USB memory stick

All electronic classroom computers are equipped with USB ports. In order to open a USB memory stick, you will need to:

  1. Complete the following steps:
    • Have a key to open equipment cabinet
    • Use the AMX panel to power on projector(s)
    • Power on projector(s) and select “computer” from the AMX panel
    • Log-on to the classroom computer using your CUNET (MC1) account
  2. Insert the USB memory stick into the USB port of the classroom computer
  3. Open USB drive from the computer and select your file(s)

Removing a USB memory stick

This is a very important step in using a USB memory stick because failure to safely remove it could corrupt the files stored on it. In order to safely remove a USB memory stick ensure that you have selected “eject” from the computer menu. Once the computer indicates that the media is safe to eject, you can then remove the USB.

Step 1
   Click on the arrow icon on the bottom right-hand side of the computer screen. Then right-click on the USB memory stick icon.
Step 2
Select “Eject”
Step 3
Wait for the “Safe to Remove Hardware” message before removing the USB memory stick.

Playing a DVD

In order to open a DVD, you will need to:

  1. Complete the following steps:
    • Have a key to open equipment cabinet
    • Use the AMX panel to power on projector(s)
    • Power on projector(s) and select “DVD” from the AMX panel
  2. Open the DVD tray and insert the disc
  3. Select play, stop, and/or pause from the AMX touch panel

Document Camera

How to use the document camera on a pull-out shelf

Classrooms equipped with a document camera allow instructors to display non-digital documents (i.e. paper) on the projection screen(s) at the front of the classroom. In this particular classroom, there is a document camera on a pull-out shelf. In order to use it, you will need to:

  1. Complete the following steps:
    • Have a key to open equipment cabinet
    • Use the AMX panel and power on projector(s)
  2. Pull out sliding document camera shelf
  3. Raise camera arm, and rotate camera head toward surface
  4. Power on document camera
  5. Select “document camera” from the AMX panel
  6. Place items on surface to display

Using the telephone

Located inside the teaching console there is a classroom telephone. This telephone can be used to contact IMS for classroom assistance. It can also be used to contact other university services such as Safety, and Facilities Management and Planning.

Finishing up

Before you go, ensure that you have completed the following steps:

  1. Power off the projector(s)
  2. Exit the AMX touch panel
  3. Log-off the classroom computer
  4. Safely remove all media from equipment cabinet
  5. Where appropriate, return wireless mouse and ensure it is on its charger
  6. Lock cabinet and ensure you take the key with you
